was this really hacking?

I’m gonna make this short so it’s gonna lack details,

I have a friend who studied cyber security and got a job in a company where she background checked potential employees, she also mentioned she used this programme/software/ search engine¿ idk what it was but she had to sign an NDA which stated she cannot use it for personal use.

she breached the policies and used it for personal use and caught her boyfriend cheating, I wanna know what does that software use that she was able to dig that deep into someone’s personal life? was she able to read messages? was she only able to see his activities? was she able to log into his accounts? to this day I wonder how the software worked.
