My wife was watching a IG short, where a person related a tale where her friends phone (android) was hacked through free wifi on a cruise. They reportedly transferred eSim to a new iPhone, gained access to contacts and spammed those for money (including this IG person), bought things from Apple store for thousands with the new phone account etc.
Is this possible via evil twin / MITM attack, or is this something else? Is this even possible via wifi or does this require USB/physical access? The youtuber's guidance was to use VPN, which could help with evil twin, but the eSim transfer sounds like it needs something else than just monitoring network traffic with evil twin.
