What was the endgame of this hack?

Hi, when I was at uni (nearly a decade ago) I was young and dumb and was watching lots of pirated sites without a)ad block b) antivirus. I was dumb, like i said. I didn't use my laptop for anything other than that really but it did have all my logins on my laptop for social media, banking etc. One day, I find that the housing contract I had signed the day before had been cancelled. I phoned the agency to ask what had happemed and they told me I cancelled it, as I'd emailed to say I'd found something else. I couldn't see email in my sent as they, the hacker, had moved it but I found it in a different folder. I then got a much wiser friend to install antivirus and make my laptop secure. All was fine in the end with my housing as I explained the situation but I always wondered what the point was? They could've accessed anything else but it seems like they hacked in through the university server just to cancel my housing and be a dick? Never had any further issues since. Let me know your theories, I'm interested in the thinking. Thanks
