Google is killing off cached webpages -- were there any vulnerabilities that may have aided in this decision?

Basically the title, are there any known vulnerabilities that might lead to Google retiring cached webpages? I read that analyzing how the Google Bot stores cached sites could potentially lead to SEO spammers, but I am not sure how that would work... Also, besides internet archives are there any public ways to see older versions of a site?
