Extracting Password From Windows Server SAM file.

Greetings,

I have an extra-credit assignment from my professor detailing that he has set a password on a Windows Server 2019 machine. He has only provided us with only the SAM file for the system and encouraged us to use 'Any means necessary' to extract the password.

So far, my understanding is that I need to grab the hash from the SAM file and use a tool like John or hashcat to crack it.

I am not looking for a handhold, but I would appreciate some guidance on this. Is this even possible without access to the system registry?
