ZAP with vpns?

So im using zap to try to pull a request within a webstite but I cant get zap to work I set up the proxie and zap acts like there is no proxie set up, im using a vpn because when I disable it I get an invalid certificate notification. So how do I make zap work with a vpn or fix the issue with the certificate notification? Any ideas will help ik you guys arent omnipotent
