phone spoofing/prank calling from a hacker perspective

i wanted to start this post off by saying i am not a hacker, but i am genuinely interested in the reasoning behind caller id spoofing, specifically the method of spoofing used in the call i just received.

i just received a call from what appeared to be my boyfriend, his contact name and contact photo and everything. i picked up and it was some dude, (possibly a bot?) claiming that i have been texting his girl in the middle of the night. he was really pissed, lmao. i asked who it was, and he said “dont try to play with me, boy!” i assumed it was a bot at that moment because i am a chick. i hung up and immediately started to look for wtf that was, especially since it was coming from my boyfriends number (or so it appeared.) i found out it could be considered caller id spoofing.

my question is: what is the point of such an aggressive call? what information are they getting or trying to get by me picking up? if i stayed on the line, where could the convo had gone? “youve been texting my girl! give me your ssn!” ??? i am just confused more than anything, and somewhat intrigued. hopefully this isnt too dumb of a question, as i am looking for more opinions/insight than a concrete answer. thanks yall :)
