Throwback question - What was the point of the AOL warez chat rooms that were full of punting?

Ok so you would go to those chat rooms and see if it was the punting in the room that caused everything to crash or the random person who spotted you in the user list now IM punting you that accomplishes it first.

I still don't understand the point of those rooms. Was it just pointless script kiddie chaos war?
