How do you make a HomeLab?

I know it's a basic question, but it's not. There's pre-built labs on the internet. Or you can just use VirtualBox to set up VM's. Or you can use Docker, Vagrant, Kubernetes, etc.

Or you could get actual devices and set them up on your network. What is the best way to set up a homelab with a hacker machine, a Windows machine, and (let's say) a simulated Android machine that is running on an emulator?

What about an edge network with a firewall and a traffic sampler?
