One of my favorite gaming servers (Salty Gaming) had its entire server box hacked. The hackers are demanding money.

A space engineers, Conan, ark, and other game servers Salty Gaming runs were hacked today. We lost all of our progress and the files are now encrypted with the hackers demanding a payment.

How common is this and how do the average game servers ward against this sort of ransomware attack?
