Has anyone successfully traced a spam ( text of email ) message back to it’s original source? If so, how?

I keep receiving messages from the same group of people and I’m curious to find out who’s behind it. So far, I’ve been able to lookup the IP of the domain and find the information of the WHOIS account, but that’s all.
