A friend says he's been hacked

I have a friend who says his devices and network has been compromised as he receives emails and Snapchats that say what he is doing.

For example, he would be watching a tv show on Netflix and would get a Snapchat from one of his friends of a picture of a wall (no face or body) that says he is watching said tv show on Netflix. When asking his friend if they sent it, the friend denies this and can confirm they did not do this. Coincidently it is multiple friends on Snapchat and the people my friend snaps the most.

My friend also receives emails that said what he is doing on his laptop. This makes us believe it is not just a device hack but a Network hack/virus.

Thinking it is spyware, we downloaded multiple anti-virus softwares and did multiple scans each could not find anything.

These events still occurred even after using VPN.

I was hoping to post this story to see if anyone can help us solve a few things.

  • Is this a known Spyware? Has anyone encountered a similar experience?
  • How to prevent this attack? If it has affected the network. Will cleaning all devices be sufficient?
  • Is the spyware so sophisticated that getting a new modem and cleaning all devices would not solve the issue?
  • How to confirm he is truly being hacked? Would using a tool such as Wireshark help determine suspicious requests to the network?
  • How to determine what spyware it is. Are there tools that can help determine what spyware it is? My friend would like to know how it is done to give peace of mind and to prevent it from happening in the future.
  • Is this possible to get the virus without doing a suspicious activity? For example without torrenting, clicking a fraudulent link, downloading a sketchy app? Is it possible for a person to put such virus onto a system without any actions from the user?

Thank you so much for reading this and for any help we receive.
