Cracking an MD5 hash with hashcat

I have this MD5 hash that I wanted to crack, and I don't know anything about the actual word. I brute-forced normally till a length of 6 characters but now the compute time has gone exponentially higher.

I tried a few masks aswell but since I know nothing about the actual word, it's like shooting in the dark.
I wanted to try a dictionary attack next but I'm a bit confused as to what it is.

Will it simply try every word in the wordlist and see if that's the hash? or is it smart enough to also try some combinations of the words in the list.

Also, if there's a better approach I could take, please do let me know.

Thanks!!
