xargs with crunch

I am trying to use xargs and crunch together to make a wordlist, I need it to be a 4 letter English word followed by up to 4 numbers 1-9 I'm trying:

xargs crunch 5 8 123456789 -s <words.txt > wordlist.txt

and I get an error saying

can't find char at pos #1 in cset

if there is a better command or something I am not understanding about crunch I'd love to hear suggestions, thank you
