Airodump only shows Wireless APs and not clients

Hi there! I am trying to detect wifi devices such as phones and laptops around me that are *not* connected to my network.

When I use the following code:

airodump-ng --ivs --write testcapture --beacons mon0

I can see all AP wifi routers but unable to see any mobile devices such as my phone.

Any idea what i am doing wrong?
