bruteforce exists, but has it actually ever worked?

I'm just wondering how terrible and weak bruteforce actually is.

Has it ever worked for anyone on passwords longer than 4 characters?

Cracking some seemingly basic passwords like this one: "B1gBoy_1970"

would take ~millions of years - hundreds of years(with supercomputers).
