I want to begin writing my own external API's for software, but I'm not sure how to get started.

I'm looking to create bots for applications with no API, and I really want to step up my programming game in that regard. Of course, I'll be doing this legally, but I've always wondered how developers design external API's to communicate with apps, and how I could begin doing the same thing. Books, online resources, or just pointers in the right direction are all super helpful here. (Excuse me if any of my terminology is incorrect)
