How safe is it to open a suspicious archive with a text editor?

I guess if you are not giving it executable permissions, you should be fine. I found a suspicious zip with a .doc file. When I try to read the xml inside it, it says it's corrupted in windows.

I wanna read it on Linux. Should I use a live usb?

Edit: also, it's highly probable it will only work on Windows right?
